Comprising 13 individual projects and spanning 1700 km from Melbourne to Brisbane, Australian Rail Track Corporation’s (ARTC) Inland Rail is the largest freight rail project in Australia and one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the world.

ARTC is working towards a program Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating with the IS Council.

ARTC appointed Losee Consulting as the Independent Sustainability Professionals for the entire program. Our work is at ‘arm’s length’ to meet the IS Council’s independence requirements for credits including Man‑3 and Man‑5.

Our activities include—

• Regular meetings with Inland Rail’s sustainability team to review progress and issues
• Auditing design and construction contractors
• Critically reviewing technical documents (e.g. climate change and materials modelling)
• Reviewing credit summary forms and evidence documents prior to submission for verification.

Although detached, our guidance has aided ARTC in determining its overall approach to the program rating and shaping how it is leading its many delivery partners to apply sustainability.
