Freight Rail Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan
Strategy and action plan to implement ESG commitment to reduce emissions
Project
Our client manages an 8,500 km network transporting 200 Mt of freight annually. They are a vital part of the national transport network supporting the economic development of Australia. Our client champions rail as an efficient, reliable and lower carbon mode of transport.
Losee was appointed to develop a plan for Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction and identify actions to contribute to the target it had adopted, as well as providing high-level guidance on Scope 3 and future, deeper reductions.
Solution
The plan involved presenting, reviewing, and confirming the company’s emissions profile, which had been based on National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting initially. We developed an emissions intensity baseline and outlined short-term actions for reduction up to 2024. Additionally, a roadmap for deeper reductions by 2050, with a potential interim target by 2030, was developed.
Our approach included a series of structured interviews with key client personnel to shape strategies and identify actions for immediate and long-term implementation.
The plan included principles for reduction strategies (e.g. forward-looking, time-bound, measurable and verifiable) and set out a preferred reduction hierarchy. The plan incorporated a range of actions beneath seven strategies covering: Staff and behaviour; Buildings; Vehicles; Plan and machinery; Procurement; Construction; and Data and emissions management.
Our deliverable contributed to our client’s 2022 ESG report, leading to further consideration of scope 3 and the long-term strategy, reinforcing their commitment to a sustainable future.
