Queensland Government—Restricted Plastic Bag Use
Assisting the Queensland Government to build support for restricting use of lightweight plastic bagsProject
The Queensland Government was investigating restrictions on single-use plastic bags. Four states already had bans in place, but previous Queensland efforts had not succeeded.
We assisted this investigation and collaborated with The Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) team. Together, we engaged peak stakeholders across environment groups, academia, and business.
Solution
Scott Losee achieved the following:
- Briefed the then minister, the Hon Dr Steven Miles
- Produced a discussion paper
- Facilitated the stakeholder forum
- Convened bilateral meetings
- Analysed consultation results
- Drafted a public information paper.
Scott’s involvement allowed EHP to work more at arm’s length, encouraging stakeholders to contribute their perspectives. By outsourcing part of the policy activity, EHP was able to continue momentum on the issue despite competing policy demands.
As of 1 July 2018, single-use lightweight plastic shopping bags have been banned in Queensland.
