Bruce Highway, Rockhampton Northern Access Upgrade—construction sustainability services
Implementation of sustainability with construction team to meet TMR specificationsProject
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) was transitioning to require all projects above $100 million to complete an Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating.
The Rockhampton Northern Access Upgrade (RNAU) had passed the design phase, so TMR applied a non-certified IS approach for construction, managed through a third-party contract administrator. The RNAU Joint Venture (RNAJV), comprising McIlwain Civil Engineering and SGQ, engaged Losee Consulting to advise and implement sustainability alongside the project team.
Solution
Successes with the project included:
- Rapid approval of the Infrastructure Sustainability Management Plan (Construction)
- Engaging construction team on TMR’s sustainability expectations
- Enhancing McIlwain policies and procedures to incorporate sustainability
- Providing monthly sustainability reporting against objectives and targets for the administrator and TMR.
This was the Joint Venture partners’ first experience with IS, which they will use to demonstrate their capability for future TMR projects.
The project reached practical completion in August 2021 and achieved all sustainability targets.
