Bruce Highway, Deception Bay Interchange Upgrade—Sustainability management
Implementation of sustainability during construction on major highway upgradeProject
This $163.3 million interchange upgrade on the Bruce Highway at Deception Bay Road will improve safety and cater for future traffic growth.
In keeping with its policies, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) set high sustainability expectations for the project.
TMR awarded BMD Constructions the Transport Infrastructure Contract – Construct Only (TIC-CO) contract to deliver the works. TIC‑COs had encountered early challenges with sustainability ratings due to the overlap of sustainability aspects between the design and construction phases, and a rating scheme geared to Design & Construct (D&C) or alliance delivery models.
Solution
Beginning with BMD at construction phase, Losee Consulting began by grappling with the sustainability approaches devised by the design engineers.
We provided the required Sustainability Management Representative and Infrastructure Sustainability Accredited Professional (ISAP) and coordinated sustainability in project delivery.
Early project successes included:
- 95% non-potable water used for construction
- High recycling levels for construction waste.
BMD is continuing to meet TMR’s sustainability expectations in delivery.
