Rockhampton Northern Access Upgrade, construction sustainability

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) was transitioning to requiring all projects above $100 million to complete an Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) rating. The Rockhampton Northern Access Upgrade had passed design phase, so TMR elected to apply a non-certified IS approach for construction, managed through a third party contract administrator.

The RNAJV, comprising McIlwain Civil Engineering and SGQ, engaged Losee Consulting to advise on and implement sustainability alongside the project team.

Some early successes with this project have included:

  • Rapid approval of the Infrastructure Sustainability Management Plan (Construction) enabling construction to proceed
  • Engaging the construction team on TMR’s sustainability expectations
  • Enhancing McIlwain policies and procedures to incorporate sustainability
  • Providing monthly sustainability reporting against objectives and targets for the administrator and TMR

This has been the JV partner’s first experience with IS, which they will now be able to use to demonstrate their capability for future TMR projects.
